ECE Architecture
Designing for designers. Our Sussex Studio represented the ultimate test of creating a space that embodied our vision, principles, and collective creative ambition.
When architects design their own workspace, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Our Sussex Studio project challenged us to create a space that not only functions brilliantly but also stands as a physical manifesto of our design philosophy. With our own team as the client, we had the rare opportunity to demonstrate exactly what ECE is capable of.

Our approach centred on honesty and purpose in design. We embraced minimal interventions that celebrate the building’s original fabric, using materials only where needed and always in the most appropriate way. The design transformed what was once an empty shell into a modern, flexible environment that accommodates our growing practice while encouraging wellbeing and productivity.
A central circulation zone creates order within the space, with a dropped ceiling concealing services, while large windows flood the studio with natural light. The result is a workspace that’s both functional and inspiring.

Of course, designing a studio for up to 90 architects and town planners presented its own unique challenge: navigating different professional opinions on every design decision. Through careful consultation and collaborative workshops, we achieved a coherent, well-considered space despite the multitude of perspectives.
Other challenges included working with an irregular building footprint and managing street noise and pollution through an MVHR ventilation system while maintaining our commitment to exposed concrete soffits.

Environmental consciousness guided our material selections throughout the project. We chose carpets with high recycled content and selected linoleum over vinyl for its sustainability credentials. By exposing the concrete soffits rather than installing a conventional ceiling, we reduced material usage while revealing the thermal mass that helps regulate temperature, proving that environmentally sound decisions can also create visually striking spaces. Every element, from the shelving units to the colour palette, was carefully considered to create a coherent design language that reflects our practice’s values.
The completed studio provides a large open plan workspace for up to 90 people across both ECE Architecture and ECE Planning teams, supporting greater collaboration. Our multi-purpose kitchen serves as a social hub and creative space, while additional meeting rooms provide privacy when needed. Thoughtfully designed breakout areas offer spaces for quiet reflection away from the main studio.
The central location gives our team convenient access to Worthing’s beach, parks, shops, and cafés, enhancing the work-life balance we value so highly.

Our Sussex Studio stands as both our home and our showcase – a space where clients can experience our design principles first-hand, where potential team members can envision their future, and where our current team can thrive.
It embodies our belief that exceptional spaces begin with understanding both practical needs and human experience.
