ECE Architecture

A refined rooftop extension for Bedford Free School elevates learning space and civic presence, uniting contemporary design, technical delivery, and heritage.

Adding a multipurpose hall, activity studio, changing rooms, and offices, the rooftop extension transforms the school’s capability. ECE Architecture delivered a full RIBA Stages 1-7 service, ensuring design intent translated into buildable, high-performing spaces.

Metal-cladded roof box extension on Bedford Free School main brick building.

Located near the listed St Mary’s Church and within Bedford’s designated key area of change, the project demanded a carefully calibrated response. We shaped a lightweight rooftop architecture, using an aluminium mesh wrap and precisely positioned openings to balance transparency, solidity, and civic expression. The result reduces perceived mass, refines the skyline, and creates a confident, contemporary counterpart to its historic neighbour.

Working in a sensitive heritage setting atop an occupied school required meticulous coordination. Early dialogue and clear visualisations secured full support from Heritage England, while close collaboration with the client team smoothed the planning route. Our technical specialists resolved structural interfaces, acoustic control, and access, enabling safe construction and seamless integration without disrupting daily school life.

Materially, the perforated aluminium mesh provides a unifying veil, mediating daylight and views while giving depth to the façade. Designed in concert with openings, the system balances solar control and natural light, minimises apparent weight, and offers durable, low-maintenance performance – delivering a distinct identity that reads as both crafted and quietly efficient on the townscape.

Programme spaces were planned for flexibility and extended use. The multipurpose hall and studio support assemblies, sport, and performance; changing rooms provide robust, efficient support; and new offices enhance pastoral and operational capacity. Together, these improvements uplift daily experience, expand community potential, and maximise value within the existing footprint.

A contemporary rooftop addition, grounded in heritage context and delivered with technical integrity. The Bedford Free School extension elevates capacity and character, creating lasting value for students, staff, and the town.
