Culverwells, “The Old Brewery”

ECE Architecture
Culverwells, the Grade II listed Old Brewery in Lewes, is a sensitive reinvention within the South Downs National Park, delivering new homes and revitalised commercial space around a reinstated historic courtyard.
We drew on the character of the Old Brewery to craft a contemporary Sussex response that respects the South Downs setting. A carefully scaled new building complements the historic fabric, enabling residential growth while retaining active commercial frontage and reinforcing the courtyard at Davey’s Lane.

In the heart of Lewes, we enhanced the listed asset, delivered 12 new homes, and safeguarded 466 sqm of ground-floor commercial space. Completing the courtyard enclosure restored legibility and movement with a pedestrian link to Davey’s Lane and a new turning facility for Thomas Street residents.

Balancing heritage significance, neighbour amenity, and National Park sensitivities demanded precision. We refined massing and window placement to reduce overlooking, calibrated heights to surrounding rooflines, and specified materials that echo the brewery. Our in-house technical team ensured the design translated seamlessly on site.

Traditional Sussex forms are expressed with contemporary clarity: brickwork, clay tiles, and finely detailed openings provide a modern reflection of the brewery. Reinstating the courtyard creates a welcoming sequence between Thomas Street and Davey’s Lane, enhancing permeability and day-to-day use.

Culverwells shows how design excellence and rigorous delivery can safeguard heritage while creating lasting value. In the South Downs context, we delivered homes, sustained local enterprise, and secured a vibrant future for a cherished Lewes landmark.
