ECE Architecture, in collaboration with local design and make studio millimetre, proudly unveiled our handcrafted kennel design, ‘In a Nutshell’, at this year’s Goodwoof Festival.

We are excited to share the official video showcasing the design and making process, developed in close partnership with millimetre.

Designed as part of the annual Barkitecture competition, the project was inspired by the protective shell of a nut – a natural form that embodies strength, shelter and serenity. Created especially for Sandy, a dog attuned to woodland life, the kennel reflects the calm rhythms of the forest while offering a snug, weatherproof retreat.

Shaped like a seed and formed entirely from locally reclaimed timber blocks, ‘In a Nutshell’ is a sculptural addition to any garden. It is built to withstand the British climate and serve as a tranquil indoor or outdoor sanctuary. Inside, Sandy rests on a washable felted wool cushion, providing comfort, warmth and sustainable luxury.

The design uses a thoughtful material palette, including rubberised coconut husk, wool, and timber dowels. Together, they create a robust yet nurturing space that honours craftsmanship, nature and the special bond between dogs and their humans.

Following the competition, the kennel was auctioned to raise funds for the Wild at Heart Foundation, supporting stray dog rescue efforts around the world.
