ECE Architecture
Providing exceptional learning environments where every student thrives, Acre Wood is a purpose-built SEN secondary school which embodies thoughtful, adaptive design.
Acre Wood SEN Secondary School is a 60-place facility, designed to support diverse learning needs. The school will create spaces for students with autism spectrum disorder and profound and multiple learning disabilities to thrive in tailored environments.

Every aspect of our design prioritises student well-being and educational success. Generous classrooms accommodate wheelchairs, teaching aids, and support staff with ease, while specialist sensory rooms and therapy areas provide calm, focused environments for individual learning. Enhanced acoustic design minimises overwhelming stimuli, creating peaceful atmospheres where students with sensory sensitivities can concentrate. The building’s flexible design can adapt to evolving educational requirements, ensuring long-term value.
Designing for these diverse needs presented unique challenges requiring innovative solutions. Balancing stimulating learning environments with calming sensory considerations demanded careful material selection and spatial planning. Our integrated approach brought together acoustic specialists, accessibility experts, and educational consultants to ensure every detail serves the students. We overcame complex ventilation and lighting requirements while maintaining cost efficiency for the local authority. Through collaborative problem-solving and technical rigour, we created flexible spaces that support both high-energy group activities and quiet, individual learning, proving that exceptional design can meet seemingly contradictory needs.

The external landscape extends our inclusive design philosophy beyond the building envelope. Wheelchair-accessible pathways seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor learning environments, encouraging natural exploration and play. Sensory gardens provide therapeutic outdoor experiences, while designated quiet zones offer respite when students feel overwhelmed.
These thoughtfully designed external spaces are integral teaching environments that support curriculum delivery and emotional regulation. By creating smooth transitions between all areas of the site, we’ve ensured that mobility challenges never limit educational opportunities, reinforcing our belief that architecture should remove barriers, not create them.
Acre Wood represents architecture’s power to transform educational experiences. By placing student needs at the heart of every design decision, we’ve created an environment that supports diverse learning styles and celebrates individual achievements.
