Transforming Kingston College into a vibrant learning destination through bold architectural intervention and strategic placemaking.

We reimagined Kingston College’s entrance, creating a dynamic learning hub that elevates the institution’s presence and community connection. Our comprehensive transformation replaces a modest 1990s structure with a grand, civic-scale gateway that celebrates student life whilst enhancing thermal performance and reducing operational costs.

The new double-height entrance creates an inviting, light-filled space that transforms how students and visitors experience the college. Extensive glazing and three large circular roof lights flood the interior with natural light, whilst the open-plan design ensures vibrant activity is visible from the street.

This transparency celebrates learning and creates a genuine connection between the college and its urban context, establishing Kingston College as a recognisable local landmark.

Strategic space planning drives the success of the transformation. We relocated the library from the fifth to the first floor, activating ground-level areas and making learning resources accessible to all students.

The reimagined hub integrates dining, social spaces, and seamless connections to key facilities, including the theatre, student services, and employability hub. This creates natural circulation patterns that encourage interaction and community building.

Technical challenges strengthened our design approach. Environment Agency flood risk concerns required innovative solutions – relocating spaces to allow natural water dispersal whilst enhancing our open-plan vision. Undiscovered underground voids demanded rapid adaptation, proving that expertise and flexibility deliver exceptional outcomes when constraints become opportunities.

Comprehensive sustainability upgrades to the tower block – including new façade systems, windows, and aluminium panels – significantly improve thermal performance. This investment ensures reduced maintenance costs and operational efficiency, demonstrating how thoughtful architectural intervention creates lasting commercial value alongside exceptional student experience.
