ECE Architecture

Designing a specialist SEMH school where wellbeing and learning thrive. A calm, robust, and uplifting environment, delivered end to end, achieving outstanding client and user satisfaction.

Ropemakers Academy is a new 80-place SEMH and ASD free school in Hailsham for learners aged 4-16. We combined design excellence with rigorous technical delivery across all RIBA stages, creating spaces that support emotional regulation, inclusion, and everyday joy in learning.

The three-storey school brings clarity and calm to a complex brief. Distinct primary and secondary zones sit alongside specialist therapy facilities, with legible wayfinding and safeguarded circulation.

Classrooms balance robustness and warmth, using natural light, controlled acoustics, and tactile finishes to reduce sensory overload. Outdoor courts and varied play spaces extend learning beyond the classroom, supporting movement, social connection, and restorative moments throughout the day.

Set on a two-hectare sloping site with challenging geology, the project required significant regrading and a coordinated drainage strategy. We worked closely with Willmott Dixon and East Sussex County Council to sequence works, maintain programme certainty, and protect delivery. Ecology was integral – designing around habitats for newts, bats, and birds, while creating a resilient, future-proofed campus.

Student experience was our north star. Spaces transition from lively collaboration to quiet retreat, enabling personalised pathways and positive behaviour. Therapy rooms, sensory-supportive breakout areas, and staff wellbeing spaces strengthen pastoral care and targeted interventions. The result is a calm, inclusive setting where students feel safe, engaged, and proud of their school – reflected in daily use and feedback.

From early engagement to handover, we collaborated with educators, specialists, and the independent operator to align pedagogy, safeguarding, and operations. Clear briefing, prototyping of key spaces, and cost-informed decision-making ensured quality where it matters most. As part of the council’s wider specialist provision, the school delivers enduring benefits for learners, families, and the community.

Ropemakers Academy elevates specialist education with a welcoming, high-quality environment shaped around SEMH needs. Recognised with the SECBE Award for Outstanding Customer Satisfaction, it shows how thoughtful design and technical integrity can transform outcomes, day one and long term.
