An architect’s own clifftop residence inspired by California’s Case Study Houses, where panoramic sea views and Sussex landscapes merge through innovative design.

Drawing inspiration from the iconic Case Study Houses of 1950s California, this personal project represents architectural passion made manifest. The single-storey design embraces its dramatic coastal setting, where views of both sea and Sussex countryside informed every design decision.

Conceived as a linear ‘shoebox’ with expansive glazing, the house choreographs spectacular views through carefully planned sight lines. A central staircase reveals the sea upon arrival, whilst floor-to-ceiling glass creates transparency from entrance to deck.

The nine-grid plan divides public and private spaces efficiently – dining, kitchen and living areas command the view on one side, with bedrooms and bathrooms positioned privately opposite. A large deck extends the living space towards the horizon, designed for optimal viewing whether standing or seated.

The coastal location presented unique challenges requiring innovative solutions. Despite the building’s substantial scale, planning approval was secured immediately, though the distinctive bright red chimney required height adjustments.

Extensive geotechnical surveys addressed coastal erosion concerns and confirmed the stability of the rock foundation. The partially subterranean design demanded meticulous waterproofing for the lower-level bedrooms and utility spaces. Our technical expertise ensured these challenges became design opportunities, with the robust concrete construction providing both structural integrity and distinctive industrial expression throughout.

This project exemplifies our belief that exceptional architecture emerges from a deep understanding of place and purpose. Creating spaces that continue to inspire years after completion, Toot Rise demonstrates how personal investment and technical excellence combine to deliver lasting value.
