Breathing new life into a cherished theatre in Bognor Regis to revitalise it for the next generation.

After more than four decades serving the community, Alexandra Theatre needed to evolve. Ageing infrastructure threatened its viability, yet its cultural significance remained unwavering. With support from a levelling-up grant and Arun District Council, we were commissioned as Executive Architects on the thoughtful refurbishment to secure its future.

The redevelopment balances heritage respect with contemporary functionality, with a refurbished auditorium introducing new seating and upgraded acoustics to enhance the audience experience. A striking new front-of-house extension creates an inviting foyer, café, and improved facilities, whilst expanded studio spaces now serve rehearsals, workshops, and community gatherings. Every intervention is designed to celebrate the theatre’s character whilst meeting modern expectations.

Navigating a live cultural venue presented genuine constraints. We worked closely with the theatre team to stage works sensitively, minimising disruption to programming and performances. Our technical expertise ensured each element – from sightlines to building services – is meticulously planned, allowing the vision to become reality without compromise.

We conducted a comprehensive life cycle assessment, exploring whether a CLT and glulam frame could replace the hybrid concrete and timber structure. Whilst initial analysis suggested significant carbon savings, acoustic and fire performance requirements, particularly for the first floor dance studios, proved challenging.

Jessica Smith, who led the analysis, reflected: “It highlighted the importance of considering these factors early in the design process. Making such changes later introduces significant challenges.” This experience reinforced how strategic sustainability thinking, integrated from project inception, yields genuine environmental benefits.

Accessibility stands at the heart of our approach. Step-free routes, improved wayfinding, and enhanced facilities now welcome everyone, reflecting the theatre’s inclusive mission.
