Slugwash Lane – hero

ECE Architecture

Village-inspired courtyard development balancing contemporary design with rural heritage, creating six bespoke homes that celebrate Wivelsfield Green’s distinctive character.

Situated in Wivelsfield Green, this development draws inspiration from local architectural vernacular, creating homes that feel intrinsically part of the village’s fabric whilst delivering contemporary living spaces.

Our design centres on a thoughtful courtyard arrangement promoting community interaction. Houses are orientated around this shared space with front gardens designed to capture morning sunlight – perfect for conversations between neighbours. The built form respects existing field patterns whilst maintaining a relationship to the site’s past agricultural uses.

The design strategy emerged from a rigorous analysis of Wivelsfield Parish’s architectural character. Each of the seven homes is uniquely tailored to site constraints whilst celebrating local heritage through considered detailing and material choices.

Biodiversity Net Gain presented a significant challenge. We developed a comprehensive solution featuring an ecological border around the entire site, enhancing existing tree lines and hedgerows whilst introducing intensive green roofs. This achieved the required biodiversity uplift while maintaining appropriate development density.

Slugwash Lane – site layout

Slugwash Lane honours the village character whilst delivering contemporary, sustainable living. Through innovative ecological solutions and community-focused planning, we’ve created homes that genuinely belong to their place and time in this rural setting.
